Letter to the Editor: Queen Elizabeth, II

As everybody is aware of by now, Queen Elizabeth, II handed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Citadel, her summer season residence in Scotland. She was 96 years previous and had reigned 70 years as Britain’s longest serving Monarch. She was revered the world over for her grace, diplomacy and steadfast loyalty to the British Empire.

One of many nice honors in my life was the privilege of assembly Queen Elizabeth at Monticello in Charlottesville in July 1976, when she and her husband, Prince Phillip, got here to rejoice our Bicentennial. I had solely been within the Virginia Home of Delegates 2 ½ years on the time. I represented the counties of Alleghany and Botetourt. I stood with 40 Senators and 99 members of the Home of Delegates because the Queen and Prince Phillip got here down the road talking to every one in all us. There was no handshaking – you didn’t contact the Queen. She seemed every one in all us within the eye, smiled warmly, and mentioned, “How do you do? So good to see you.” I’ve by no means forgotten that second and I doubt that any member of the Basic Meeting current that day has forgotten. It was a “royal” second and we stood in awe.

From all accounts, Queen Elizabeth, II, will go down in historical past as one of many biggest British Monarchs of all time. She dominated with grace, dignity and an exquisite humorousness. It’s mentioned that she met with all the United States Presidents throughout her reign, excluding Lyndon B. Johnson. In our nation, the Queen had an awesome ally.

I wish to be part of with you and the remainder of the world grieving her loss and celebrating her fantastic life. The likes of Queen Elizabeth will in all probability not come once more.

Sincerely,
