Our family was thrilled when the previews for Big Hero 6 appeared. We saw the film in theaters soon after it opened and absolutely loved it, so I couldn’t wait to bring a copy home.

The Blu-ray/DVD gift set launched on Tuesday, February 24th. If you haven’t picked it up yet, check your local Walmart—there’s usually a large display near the registers with exclusive packs and gift-with-purchase sets.

I also spotted specialty packs in the movie section at the back of the store. Some sets include fun Big Hero 6 merchandise and toys my kids were excited about. Your purchase of the Blu-ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase set may also include a digital movie on Vudu while supplies last—scan your receipt with the Walmart app’s Savings Catcher and watch for an email or message with redemption details. Having the movie available on a device can be a lifesaver during busy outings.

Big Hero 6 back by the movies

To celebrate the release, I made these Baymax Cupcakes to enjoy during a home movie night. They’re simple, kid-friendly, and always bring smiles.

These cupcakes are easy to make. Start with a boxed cake mix—I tend to bake 18 cupcakes instead of 24 so they rise taller. For the best peak, bake at 400°F for 11–13 minutes. Chocolate works well with the marshmallow frosting, but use any cake flavor you prefer. You’ll also need large marshmallows and black decorating gel for Baymax’s face and arms.

Make the marshmallow frosting (recipe below) and fill a piping bag fitted with a round tip. Pipe a dollop of frosting onto each cupcake. The marshmallow frosting is a bit soft and will droop slightly as it sits, which actually mimics Baymax when he deflates a little in the movie—cute and fitting.

To create Baymax’s face, squeeze two small black dots of decorating gel onto one flat end of a large marshmallow for the eyes. Use a toothpick to drag a little gel from one dot to the other, forming a thin line between the eyes. Let the gel set for a few minutes.

For Baymax’s arms, take another marshmallow and make two cuts from the bottom corners to the top middle, creating three triangular pieces. Use the two outer triangles as arms, with the wider ends serving as shoulders. The center triangle can be discarded or enjoyed as a snack. Repeat for each cupcake.

The photo below shows the components before assembly: the frosted cupcake, the marshmallow head with eyes, and the marshmallow arms.

Place the marshmallow head in the center of the frosting. Attach an arm piece to each side of the head, pressing the cut/sticky edge into the frosting so the wider shoulder end sits near the head. Repeat for all cupcakes.

Finish the remaining cupcakes and prepare for a cozy movie night. These are especially fun for kids and easy enough to assemble together as a family activity.

The slightly droopy marshmallow frosting adds character—reminding me of Baymax gently deflating in the film. How will your family celebrate when you bring the movie home?

Baymax Cupcakes {Big Hero 6}

Created by Amber Brady
18 cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 15.25 oz (432 g) box cake mix, flavor optional
  • Ingredients to prepare the cake mix (oil, water, eggs) as directed on the box
  • Large marshmallows
  • Black decorating gel
  • ½ cup (113 g) butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 7 oz (198 g) jar marshmallow creme
  • 1 tsp clear vanilla extract (or regular vanilla)

Instructions

  • Mix the cake mix according to package directions, but fill 18 paper cups instead of 24.
  • Bake at 400°F (204°C) for 11–13 minutes to create taller peaks, which reduces the amount of frosting needed.
  • To make the marshmallow frosting: beat the butter and powdered sugar with an electric mixer until crumbly. Add half the marshmallow creme and the vanilla, beat to combine, then add the remaining marshmallow creme and beat until smooth. Transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
  • Pipe a scoop of marshmallow frosting onto each cupcake. The frosting is slightly soft and may droop as it sits—this is normal and gives a shapely look.
  • For each marshmallow head, squeeze two black gel dots on one flat end. Use a toothpick to drag a small amount of gel between the dots to form Baymax’s eye line. Let set for a few minutes.
  • Cut another marshmallow from the bottom corners to the top middle to create three triangles. Use the two outer triangles as arms, with the wider ends as shoulders. Repeat for each cupcake.
  • Assemble by placing the marshmallow head in the center of the frosting and positioning one arm on each side with the sticky cut edge pressing into the frosting. Repeat for all cupcakes.
