What Exactly is a Buckeye? Exploring the Beloved Candy

For those unfamiliar with this delightful treat, Buckeyes are a cherished homemade candy, particularly popular in Ohio. Also known as Peanut Butter Balls, these confections are traditionally crafted from a rich mixture of peanut butter, butter, and vanilla, expertly blended with powdered sugar. The mixture is then rolled into small, golf-ball-sized spheres that are partially dipped in melted chocolate, leaving a small circle of peanut butter exposed at the top. This distinctive appearance is what gives them their name, as they strikingly resemble the nuts from the Ohio state tree, the Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra).

The cultural significance of Buckeyes extends beyond just a sweet treat. In Ohio, the term “Buckeye” also proudly serves as the mascot for Ohio State University’s fiercely celebrated football team. This deep-rooted association means that Buckeyes are often a staple during football season, gracing tailgate parties, game day celebrations, and family gatherings as a beloved symbol of state pride and deliciousness.

My adoration for Buckeyes is undeniable, inspiring me to create numerous variations that capture their essence in different forms. I’ve developed recipes for Buckeye cookies, rich Buckeye brownies, and even savory-sweet peanut butter pretzel bites, all fashioned after that timeless peanut butter and chocolate flavor profile. Given the ongoing football season and the widespread love for this iconic combination, transforming it into a versatile game day dip felt like a natural, delicious progression.

Introducing the Ultimate Buckeye Dip: Creamy, Dreamy, and Easy

This Buckeye Dip recipe is designed to deliver all the enchanting flavors of traditional Buckeye candies with an added layer of smooth, irresistible creaminess. It mirrors the core ingredients of the classic confection but introduces cream cheese for an ultra-velvety texture, making it perfect for dipping. Instead of partially coating individual balls in chocolate, we generously fold in mini chocolate chips, ensuring a delightful burst of chocolate in every single bite. This thoughtful addition not only simplifies the preparation process but also enhances the overall flavor experience, providing a balanced and consistent taste.

Traditional peanut butter balls often call for a substantial amount of powdered sugar to achieve their dense, firm consistency. However, for this dip, I aimed for a slightly lighter approach that would still be incredibly flavorful without being overwhelmingly rich. My goal was to create a dip that you could easily scoop with graham crackers or pretzels without feeling overly indulgent after just a few bites. The result is a dip that strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and a delightful, spreadable texture.

This Buckeye Dip has the added benefits of a pre + probiotic with PB2 and tastes like an indulgent treat.

A key ingredient in achieving this ideal balance and adding an extra dimension of goodness is PB2 Pre + Probiotic Peanut Powder. This ingenious product brings that authentic, deep roasted peanut butter flavor we all love, but in a powdered form. This not only contributes to a wonderfully thick and creamy dip texture without requiring excessive amounts of powdered sugar but also comes with the added benefit of pre and probiotics. These support digestive health, making this dessert dip a win-win: it’s incredibly tasty, and nobody will even notice the beneficial boost! Enjoying desserts with a little extra wellness factor is always a welcome bonus.

The versatility of this Buckeye Dip means the possibilities for dippers are limited only by your imagination. We found it pairs wonderfully with crunchy pretzels, classic honey graham crackers, and my personal favorite, chocolate graham crackers. But don’t stop there! Consider fresh fruit like crisp apple slices or sweet banana coins for a refreshing contrast. Chocolate-covered pretzels would amplify the chocolate factor, while vanilla wafers, shortbread cookies, or even animal crackers could add their own unique charm. You could even try dipping savory options like celery sticks for an unexpected yet delicious combination of flavors and textures. Get creative and find your perfect pairing!

My family absolutely raved about this Buckeye Dip, and it quickly became a new favorite in our household. We’re already anticipating our next batch! It’s truly ideal for a wide array of occasions: serving at tailgating events, impressing guests at a dinner party, adding a festive touch to holiday celebrations, or simply as a satisfying after-school snack. No matter when or where you serve it, this dip is sure to make everyone a big fan, eliciting smiles and requests for the recipe.

Buckeye Dip is the perfect appetizer or snack for parties, holidays, or game day. This dessert dip is full of peanut butter and chocolate chips and goes well with graham crackers, pretzels, or fruit - like apples.

Ingredients

  • 12 Tbsp (78 g) PB2 peanut powder, (¾ cup)
  • 6 Tbsp water
  • 8 oz (226 g) Neufchatel cream cheese, (1 brick) room temperature
  • 8 Tbsp (113 g) butter, (1 stick) room temperature
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (85 g) semi-sweet mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the PB2 peanut powder and water. Whisk or stir until a smooth, thick peanut butter consistency is formed.
  2. Add the softened Neufchatel cream cheese and room-temperature butter to the bowl. Using an electric hand mixer, beat these ingredients together until the mixture is light, fluffy, and completely smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Gradually add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt to the bowl. Continue mixing with the electric mixer until all ingredients are well combined and the dip is creamy. Once smooth, gently fold in the mini semi-sweet chocolate chips by hand with a spatula to evenly distribute them throughout the dip.
  4. Serve your delicious Buckeye Dip immediately with your choice of dippers such as pretzels, various graham crackers, or fresh fruit slices. Enjoy!

Notes

*Yield: Approximately 2 cups of dip.

*To make ahead, store the Buckeye Dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can be served chilled directly from the fridge or allowed to come to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for a softer, creamier texture.
