What Is Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake?

This cake is typically served unfrosted and finished with a sweet streusel made from butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Mini chocolate chips folded into the batter give each bite a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate boost, blending the best parts of a crumb cake and a chocolate chip cake.

Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips so chocolate is evenly distributed through every slice.

  • Combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and melted butter in a small bowl. Mix with a fork or rub between your fingers until crumbly. Chill until ready to use.

Step 2: Prepare the cake batter

  2. Cream room-temperature butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs and vanilla, mixing until combined.
  4. Mix in the sour cream and milk, scraping the bowl as needed.

Step 3: Assemble

Step 4: Bake

  • Bake at 350°F for 40–45 minutes, until the cake springs back in the center and does not jiggle. A toothpick test can be tricky because the crumb topping may rub off; instead, press gently in the center to check firmness. Be careful—chocolate chips retain heat.

The finished cake is tender and moist with a crunchy, buttery streusel that mimics a bakery-style chocolate chip crumb cake.
