I love the colors of fall. Though my favorite season is late spring into early summer, autumn’s palette always sparks joy. The cooler weather does have one downside: I tend to bundle up, stay inside and snack more. So when those cravings hit, I try to reach for healthier options—and I’m always looking for snacks my kids will actually enjoy instead of fruit snacks, chips or granola bars.

When I tried Post Alpha-Bits cereal, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It has just a hint of sweetness—enough that my kids like it but not overtly sugary. The box notes that a 30 g serving contains 20 g of whole grains and 12 essential vitamins and nutrients, including zinc and iron to support healthy brain development. That made me feel better about offering it as a snack. My daughter immediately shouted “Super Why!” when she saw the box—she’s a PBS fan—while my four-year-old son was excited to hunt for the letters in his name.

I decided to turn the cereal into a playful learning moment. We took a short walk outside to gather inspiration from the fall colors and then came inside to photograph things that made us happy about the season. I made a simple worksheet so my son could match letters to the pictures. Then we mixed up a Fall Snack Mix using the Alpha-Bits as the base so the kids could snack while they played with letters. I added pretzel sticks, dried cranberries, mini marshmallows and a handful of candy for color. My son had fun finding the letters that spelled the words in the photos and even tried teaching his little sister as he worked. Those small moments—healthy snack, a creative activity and family time—made me feel like I’d done something right.
