Last Christmas I made classic buckeyes — the beloved chocolate-and-peanut-butter truffle that feels seasonal and nostalgic. That irresistible combination of chocolate and peanut butter is a favorite for many, and this year I wanted to honor that tradition in a new, shareable form.

These Buckeye Brownies capture the taste of buckeye truffles in a rich, decadent brownie bar. One square satisfies any chocolate-and-peanut-butter craving for the day. They’re indulgent and deeply satisfying — perfect for serving to company or packing up as a neighbor gift. Using a boxed brownie mix keeps the recipe quick and simple, so you can have delicious results even when time is short.
Buckeye Brownies
24 Brownies
Ingredients
Brownies:
- 18.3 oz (520 g) box family size brownie mix (for a 13×9″ pan)
Ingredients for brownie mix (follow box directions):
- ½ cup (118 ml) vegetable oil — or amount listed on the box
- ¼ cup (59 ml) water — or amount listed on the box
- 2 large eggs — or amount listed on the box
Peanut Butter Buttercream:
- ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter (1 stick), softened
- 1 cup (264 g) creamy peanut butter
- Pinch of salt
- 2½ cups (300 g) powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1–2 Tbsp milk, as needed for spreading consistency
Chocolate Glaze:
- 1 cup (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ¼ cup (66 g) creamy peanut butter
Instructions
-
Prepare the brownies according to the box directions for a 13×9″ pan. Grease the pan well before adding the batter. Bake, then allow the brownies to cool completely before frosting.
-
Make the peanut butter buttercream: in a stand mixer cream the softened butter, peanut butter, and a pinch of salt until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until combined. Add milk gradually until the buttercream reaches a spreadable consistency. Spread the peanut butter buttercream evenly over the cooled brownies.
-
Prepare the chocolate glaze by melting the semi-sweet chocolate chips and ¼ cup peanut butter together in the microwave in short bursts, stirring frequently until smooth. Pour the glaze over the peanut butter buttercream and smooth with a spatula. For a decorative finish, zig-zag the chocolate across the pan and drag a knife or spatula tip across the pattern to create a marbled effect.
