Dark Chocolate Cherry Brownies start with a doctored box mix, then get boosted with cherry-filled baking morsels and swirls of cherry preserves for a rich, fudgy treat.

I had some cherry-filled morsels on hand and kept thinking of chocolate-covered cherries, so I combined the two ideas and created these Dark Chocolate Cherry Brownies.

I prefer preserves to fresh cherries or pie filling here because cherry preserves deliver bright cherry flavor without the soft, baked fruit texture. If you enjoy chunks of cherry, use your preferred filling instead.

I admit I’m a brownie cheater—store-bought mixes are convenient and hard to beat. For this recipe I used a family-size dark chocolate fudge brownie mix, folded in cherry-filled morsels, and swirled in cherry preserves. The result is fudgy brownies with pockets of cherry that are wonderfully balanced.

These brownies are great for holiday gatherings, neighbor plates, or whenever you want a compact, shareable dessert. Enjoy!

Ingredients
- 18.2 oz (515 g) family-size dark chocolate fudge brownie mix (for a 13×9″ pan)
- 1 large egg (or as directed on the mix)
- ⅓ cup (80 ml) water (or as directed on the mix)
- ⅓ cup (80 ml) oil (or as directed on the mix)
Other ingredients:
- 7 Tbsp (133 g) black cherry preserves
- 9 oz (255 g) bag cherry-filled dark chocolate morsels (about 9 oz)
Instructions
-
Prepare the brownie mix according to package directions for a 13×9-inch pan. Stir in the cherry-filled morsels, reserving ½ cup to sprinkle on top.
-
Pour the batter into a greased 13×9-inch baking dish. Stir the cherry preserves in the jar to loosen and break up any large chunks. Spoon dollops of preserves on the batter and lightly swirl with a knife to create ribbons of cherry.
-
Scatter the reserved ½ cup of cherry-filled morsels over the top.
-
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 21–28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
-
Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting to ensure neat slices.
