About eleven years ago I was studying Culinary Arts and enrolled in a World Cuisines class. One assignment sent us to an ethnic restaurant to taste dishes outside our usual comfort zone. Growing up, my family rarely ate out and we mostly had regional American meals, so this was my chance to explore new flavors.
My boyfriend at the time (now my husband) and I picked a popular local Indian spot, surprisingly located inside a gas station, that had a strong reputation for great food. We tried vegetable samosas, chicken tikka masala, and garlic naan. Everything was delicious, and the garlic naan stuck with me — soft, buttery, and just a little charred around the edges.
I wanted to recreate that flavor at home without spending hours on dough. My go-to shortcut is Rhodes Texas Rolls. I let the rolls thaw and rise slightly, roll each piece very thin, and cook them on a hot cast-iron skillet or griddle. The result is a tender, pillowy flatbread with brown spots and bubbles that mimic traditional naan.
After cooking, I brush each warm flatbread with garlic-infused melted butter and finish with a sprinkle of chopped cilantro for brightness. The flavor is rich but balanced, with the garlic and butter soaking into the warm bread for an irresistible bite.
My kids, who can be picky eaters, loved this version of naan — they even ate the cilantro. It’s a great way to introduce family members to new flavors in a familiar format, and it pairs beautifully with curries, stews, or as a simple snack.
The method is straightforward, quick, and dependable. With minimal hands-on time you get warm, aromatic naan ready to serve in minutes — perfect when you want restaurant-style bread at home without the fuss.
Below is the recipe adapted for home cooks who want reliable results and bold flavor. It uses simple ingredients and a quick cooking technique to produce naan that’s soft, buttery, and slightly charred — everything you want from this beloved bread.

Ingredients
- 8 Rhodes Texas Rolls, thawed and risen slightly*
- ¼ cup salted butter
- 2 tsp chopped garlic
- chopped cilantro, for garnish, optional
Instructions
-
Place frozen rolls on a greased baking sheet. Cover with lightly sprayed plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, or thaw at room temperature until slightly risen (about 2 hours).
-
Melt the butter in a small pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and sauté for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant but not browned.
-
On a lightly floured surface, roll each thawed dough piece into a thin circle, about 1/8-inch thick. Thinner dough produces a more authentic, tender naan.
-
Heat a skillet or griddle to medium-high. Cook each flatbread for about 1 minute on the first side, until bubbles form and the bottom is golden. Flip and cook 30–60 seconds more until browned. If large bubbles form, gently press them down with a spatula.
-
Brush the hot flatbreads immediately with the garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro if desired. Serve warm. Store leftovers in an airtight bag at room temperature.
