These Gender Reveal Cupcakes feature pink, blue, and white swirled frosting that conceals a colored heart in the center—bite into a cupcake to reveal the baby’s gender!

I announced my pregnancy on Instagram a few months ago, and today I’m excited to share that we’re expecting a healthy baby—it’s a BOY! We already have one son and one daughter, so we’re thrilled. Since this is likely our last baby, I wanted a fun and creative gender reveal. These cupcakes were the perfect choice: each one hides a colored heart in the center that shows the gender when bitten into.

The heart insert is subtle—you won’t always notice the heart unless you cut a cupcake in half—but it still makes a sweet surprise. Here’s how I made them, step by step.

I used a homemade butter cake batter (see the recipe section below). I colored about one-third to one-half of the batter—depending on how many hearts I needed—with gel food coloring, then baked that colored batter in a greased 13×9-inch pan. After baking and cooling, I used a small heart cookie cutter to cut out hearts from the sheet cake and carefully removed each heart with a spatula.

Next, I filled cupcake liners about one-quarter to one-half full with plain white batter and pressed a colored heart upright into the center of each cup. I added more white batter on top to fill the liners about two-thirds to three-quarters full, being careful not to overfill, and then baked the cupcakes again until they were cooked through and springy to the touch.

For frosting I made two batches of my favorite cream cheese frosting. To get the pink and blue swirled effect, I drew a thin stripe of pink gel food coloring down one side of a disposable piping bag and a thin stripe of blue on the other side using a toothpick. Place the coloring as close to the tip as possible. Gently fill the bag with white frosting, avoiding smeared food color with your spatula. Twist the bag closed and squeeze gently; both colors will begin to come out together. You can use two bags or wash and reuse a bag for a second batch—after piping a lot, the colors will blend, so a fresh bag keeps the stripes distinct.

Pipe a swirl on each cupcake, starting at the outside edge and moving toward the center to fully cover the hidden heart. Repeat until all cupcakes are frosted, then serve and enjoy the reveal with family and friends.

Gender Reveal Cupcakes
Ingredients
- 3 cups (360 g) all-purpose flour, (Stir flour before measuring, then scoop and level each cup carefully. You don’t want dense cupcakes.)
- 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- ¾ tsp salt
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, (2 sticks) cut into Tablespoons
- 1 cup (237 ml) milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 x the recipe for The BEST Cream Cheese Frosting, (I used almond extract instead of vanilla for these cupcakes, but vanilla is fine.)
- Blue & Pink Food Coloring Gel
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven and prepare a 13×9-inch baking dish and a cupcake pan lined with paper liners. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the mixture becomes crumbly, scraping the bowl as needed.
-
In a separate bowl or large measuring cup whisk together the milk, eggs, and vanilla. With the mixer running, pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth batter forms. Avoid overmixing.
-
Measure out roughly one-third to one-half of the batter into a bowl. Tint this portion with pink or blue gel food coloring until you reach the desired shade. Pour the colored batter into the prepared 13×9-inch pan and bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes. Allow the cake to cool for at least 15 minutes.
-
Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut hearts from the cooled colored sheet cake. Gently lift each heart out with a spatula and set aside.
-
Fill each cupcake liner about ¼ to ½ full with plain batter. Stand a colored heart upright in the center of the batter, then cover it with more plain batter so the liner is about ⅔ to ¾ full. Do not overfill.
-
Bake the cupcakes at 400°F for 14–18 minutes, until they spring back when gently touched. Let them cool completely before frosting.
-
Prepare two batches of cream cheese frosting. Fit piping bags with large decorating tips. Use a toothpick to draw a thin line of pink gel down one side of a disposable bag and a thin line of blue down the other side, positioned close to the tip. Carefully fill the bag with the white frosting without smearing the color. Twist the bag and squeeze until both colors pipe together for a swirled effect.
-
Pipe a swirl on top of each cupcake, working from the outer edge inward to hide the colored heart. Repeat with remaining cupcakes, then enjoy revealing the gender to family and friends.
