We recently celebrated my eldest’s ninth birthday with a Harry Potter theme, and it was a golden birthday—he turned nine on the 9th—so Golden Snitch Cupcakes were an obvious choice. The party was full of homemade touches, easy activities, and treats that kids loved.

I saw variations that use Ferrero Rocher chocolates or truffles as the snitch body, but I wanted something simpler and elegant. I used gold cupcake liners, gold sprinkles, and white candy melts piped into wing shapes. The idea is quick, kid-friendly, and looks impressive on a dessert table.

My son chose lemon cupcakes with cream cheese frosting (recipe included below). The lemon’s pale yellow worked well with the gold decorations, but you can also use yellow or vanilla cake mix if you prefer.

For invitations, printables are a huge timesaver. I created my own invite using a Harry-style font and free templates. If you want a cohesive theme, matching fonts and printables for banners and food labels make setup fast and polished.

Decoration tips: print house banners and coordinate streamers in house colors. DIY crepe tassel garlands are economical and look great. A number balloon and some string/twine make a simple focal point. Printable food labels in a matching font tie everything together.

I made the cupcakes from scratch, served Butterbeer, and prepared personalized gift bags. Expect plenty of printing and cutting—card stock, a paper trimmer, glue or tape, and extra ink will be helpful.

Harry Potter Gift Bags

I designed the outside of each bag with themed graphics and a Harry-style font. Inside, each guest received a small collection of themed items assembled into a fun package.

Inside each gift bag:

  • Spell Book — small photo books with printable spell pages make an inexpensive keepsake.
  • Origami Sorting Hat — a simple folded paper craft that kids enjoy.
  • Chocolate Frog — molded chocolate frogs are easy to make in a candy mold; tap molds to remove air bubbles for clean shapes.
  • Harry Potter Glasses — a playful accessory every child enjoys wearing at the party.
  • Lightning Bolt Tattoos — small temporary tattoos are an easy, low-cost favor. Group them into packs so each child gets several.
  • Polyjuice Potion — small squeeze drinks with a themed tag make a fun “potion” beverage.

Harry Potter Party Activities

We kept activities hands-on and age-appropriate. Wand making is an easy craft using chopsticks, hot glue for texture, paint, and sealant. Kids enjoyed personalizing their wands and showing them off.

We also played a printed Harry Potter trivia/jeopardy game. Display categories and point values on a poster board; award a small prize like chocolate “Gringott’s Gold” for the winning team. After activities, we served pizza, Butterbeer, and the Golden Snitch Cupcakes. The kids then opened gift bags and practiced spells—simple, memorable fun.

How to Make Golden Snitch Cupcakes

These Golden Snitch Cupcakes are straightforward: pipe a domed frosting, coat with gold sprinkles, and add candy-melt wings. The key is a smooth dome frosting and sturdy wings so they stay in place.

Frosting technique: use an open coupler on your piping bag and pipe a dome by keeping the tip in the center and squeezing until the frosting spreads to the edges. Rotate the cupcake or move your wrist to fill gaps. Dampen a fingertip and gently smooth any sharp peaks.

While the frosting is still soft, roll the cupcake in gold sprinkles or sprinkle generously until fully covered, then shake off excess.

Piped frosting and wings

Wings: melt white candy melts per package directions, pipe the melted candy from a sealed plastic bag with a cut corner onto wax paper. Start with a small round button to anchor the wing into the frosting, then pipe about four feather points and finish with a curved top. Make matching left and right wings—about 2 1/2 inches long each—and chill until set. Make extras in case some break.

Lemon Cupcakes:

  • 3 cups (360 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • Zest of 4 lemons
  • 2/3 cup (159 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • Yellow food coloring, optional
  • 1 cup (237 ml) buttermilk, room temperature

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 16 ounces (452 g) cream cheese, cold
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Other Ingredients:

  • 30 Gold cupcake liners
  • 5.25 oz (155 g) gold sprinkles
  • 6 oz (170 g) white candy melts

Instructions

To Make the Lemon Cupcakes:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C).
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a mixer, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, then lemon zest, lemon juice, and optional food coloring.
  • Alternate adding the flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Do not overmix.
  • Line muffin tins with gold liners and fill each 2/3 full with batter.
  • Bake at 400°F for 13–15 minutes or until done. Let rest in pan 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To Make the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add butter and beat until combined.
  • Add powdered sugar and vanilla, blend until smooth. Avoid overbeating; chill if frosting becomes too soft to pipe.

To Make the Wings:

  • Melt candy melts according to package directions. Transfer to a zip-top bag, seal, and cut a small corner.
  • Pipe wings onto wax paper: start with a small round anchor, add about four feather points, and finish with a curved top. Make left and right wings; chill until set. Make extras in case of breakage.
  • Each wing should be roughly 2½ inches long; aim for at least 60 wings for 30 cupcakes.

To Assemble the Cupcakes:

  • Place gold sprinkles in a large bowl. Fit a piping bag with an open coupler and fill with cream cheese frosting.
  • Pipe a domed mound on each cupcake by squeezing near the center until the frosting spreads to the edges. Smooth any peaks with a damp fingertip.
  • Immediately sprinkle gold sprinkles over the frosting and sides until covered. Shake off excess.
  • Insert a left and right wing into each frosted cupcake and serve.

Notes

To store: gently cover cupcakes and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before serving for best texture and flavor.
