Last year I shared Cinnamon Roll kits so friends could bake when they wanted. This year I’m bringing something ready to eat: Muddy Buddy Popcorn. It’s easy to package, always popular, and a fun twist on the traditional Chex-mix-style neighbor gifts.

Think of this as puppy chow or muddy buddies, but using popcorn instead of cereal. It’s a delicious upgrade from store-bought tins of popcorn and makes a thoughtful homemade gift.

If you like, add extra milk chocolate chips or peanut butter baking chips for garnish and texture. The basics are simple and reliable: unless someone has a peanut allergy, this is something most families will happily enjoy.

Yields12 (1 cup) servings

Ingredients

  • 12 cups air popped popcorn, (about ½ cup kernels, popped)
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • Optional: extra milk chocolate chips and/or peanut butter baking chips for garnish

Instructions

  • Pop the kernels, lightly salt, and remove any un-popped kernels. Divide the popcorn into two large bowls.
  • Microwave the milk chocolate chips and peanut butter together for 30–45 seconds, then stir until smooth. Divide the chocolate mixture between the two bowls and gently fold until the popcorn is coated.
  • Place one bowl of coated popcorn into a gallon-size zip-top bag with the powdered sugar and shake to coat.
  • Spread the powdered-sugar-coated popcorn on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment. Pour the second bowl of chocolate-coated popcorn on top and gently mix by hand to finish coating. Divide into packages for neighbors and sprinkle the tops with extra chocolate or peanut butter chips for a festive look.
