There’s something undeniably captivating about the fusion of flavors in Asian cuisine, and for many, that craving often leads to restaurant favorites like the renowned pork wonton tacos. My husband and I were no exception, frequently indulging in this delightful appetizer whenever we visited certain eateries. However, as much as we loved them, the deep-fried wonton shells and the often excessive saltiness left us wishing for a lighter, homemade alternative. The Secret to Flavorful Shredded Pork: Sauces, Not Just Salt

One of the most remarkable aspects of this Shredded Pork Wonton Tacos recipe lies in its minimalist approach to seasonings. You won’t find a long list of individual spices, salt, or pepper in the pork marinade. Instead, we harness the robust, umami-rich profiles of authentic Chinese and Asian sauces to do all the heavy lifting. Ingredients like stir-fry sauce, teriyaki, and a flavorful Asian dressing bring a depth of flavor and all the necessary sodium, ensuring the pork is perfectly seasoned without becoming overly salty. This smart use of ingredients simplifies the cooking process and guarantees a balanced taste that shines through every bite.

This method not only creates a wonderfully complex flavor in the shredded pork but also contributes to a healthier outcome. By relying on the inherent flavors of these carefully chosen sauces, we avoid the need for excessive added salt, which is often a hidden culprit in many restaurant dishes. The slow-cooking process allows the pork to fully absorb these vibrant flavors, resulting in a tender, juicy filling that is incredibly aromatic and satisfying. This thoughtful balance of ingredients is what makes these homemade wonton tacos stand out from their restaurant counterparts, offering a fresher, more controlled culinary experience.

More Than Just Tacos: Versatile Shredded Pork for Endless Possibilities

When developing this recipe for Shredded Pork Wonton Tacos, I consulted various chicken wonton taco recipes as inspiration, adapting them to create a pork version that truly hits the mark. What I quickly discovered is that this recipe yields a generous amount of incredibly delicious shredded pork. Imagine topping a fresh green salad with a generous spoonful of this flavorful pork for a quick and satisfying lunch. Ingredients

For the Flavorful Shredded Pork:

  • 3 lb pork roast, (preferably butt or shoulder cut for best shredding results)
  • 1 cup rootbeer, (or any dark soda like Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Pepsi to add sweetness and tenderize the meat)
  • 6 Tbsp stir fry sauce
  • 3 Tbsp teriyaki sauce
  • 2 Tbsp molasses
  • ¾ cup Kraft Light Asian Toasted Sesame Dressing

For the Crisp Asian Slaw:

  • 2 cups coleslaw mix
  • ½ small red onion, (finely diced or thinly sliced, about ⅓ cup, for a subtle bite)
  • 2 Tbsp cilantro, freshly chopped
  • 4 Tbsp Kraft Light Asian Toasted Sesame Dressing
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

For Assembly and Serving:

  • Egg Roll Wrappers, (or wonton wrappers if you prefer smaller, appetizer-sized tacos)
  • Pan Spray, (for griddling the wrappers)
  • Limes, cut into sixths (essential for squeezing over your finished tacos for a burst of fresh flavor)

Instructions

  • **For the Pork:** Place the pork roast in a crock pot. Pour the root beer (or dark soda) over the pork. Cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the pork is incredibly tender and easily shredded.
  • Carefully remove the cooked pork from the crock pot and shred it using two forks. Discard the root beer liquid. Briefly rinse out the crock pot to remove any residue, ensuring it’s clean enough to prevent burning for the next cooking stage. Return the shredded pork to the cleaned crock pot.
  • Pour the stir-fry sauce, teriyaki sauce, molasses, and Asian dressing over the shredded pork in the crock pot. Mix thoroughly to ensure all the pork is evenly coated. Continue to heat on low for an additional 2-3 hours, allowing the pork to absorb most of the flavorful sauce and become wonderfully tender and infused.
  • **For the Asian Slaw:** Approximately one hour before you plan to serve the tacos, prepare the slaw. In a medium bowl, combine the coleslaw mix, finely diced red onion, and chopped cilantro. Toss with the Asian dressing and apple cider vinegar until well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until ready to use. This chilling time allows the flavors to meld beautifully. *Note: This slaw recipe makes enough for about 6 egg roll-sized tacos. Adjust quantities if you plan to use all the pork for tacos.*
  • **To Make the “Taco” Shells:** Lightly spray ONE side of each egg roll wrapper with pan spray. Heat a griddle to 350˚F (175˚C) and spray it lightly with pan spray as well. Fold an egg roll wrapper diagonally in half to form a triangle, ensuring the sprayed side is facing outwards. Place the folded wrapper on the griddle. Cook for 1-2 minutes until it begins to bubble and puff up, turning golden brown.
  • Flip the triangle to the other side and cook until it is also golden brown and bubbly, creating a crisp exterior.
  • Carefully open the cooked triangle to expose the inside. Lightly spray the inside with pan spray and cook the inner surface until it also becomes lightly browned and bubbly. You can gently press down on the fold to cook the seam for added crispness. To maintain a pocket for your filling, you might use a wooden spoon handle or a dowel to keep the shell slightly open while it sets. While our shells held up fairly well, some may develop small cracks at the seam as they are eaten.
  • **Assemble and Enjoy:** Fill each griddled taco shell generously with the warm shredded pork, then top with a dollop of the refreshing Asian slaw. Finish by squeezing fresh lime juice over the top – this step is absolutely crucial as the bright acidity of the lime perfectly balances and completes the flavor profile of the entire dish. Do not skip the limes! Serve immediately and savor every delicious bite. Enjoy!

Chef’s Notes for Perfect Wonton Tacos

For an extra kick, consider adding a dash of sriracha or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes to the shredded pork or the slaw. Toasted sesame seeds or chopped peanuts can also add a delightful texture and nutty flavor as a garnish. If you prefer a richer flavor, you can use regular Asian Toasted Sesame Dressing instead of the light version. Remember to taste and adjust the seasonings of the pork and slaw to your preference before serving.
