Key Ingredients for Delicious Sliders
The beauty of these ham and cheese sliders lies in their simplicity and the quality of a few key ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to create these little bites of heaven:
- Rhodes Warm-N-Serv Soft Yeast Rolls: These are the foundation of your sliders. The soft, slightly sweet rolls absorb the buttery glaze beautifully and provide the perfect texture. Using a thawed package of 12-count rolls makes assembly incredibly quick. You can find these delicious rolls from Rhodes Bake-N-Serv.
- Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip: Whether you prefer the tangy creaminess of mayonnaise or the sweeter zest of Miracle Whip, a thin layer on the rolls adds moisture and a subtle flavor boost. Feel free to mix half of each for a balanced taste.
- Sliced Ham: You’ll need about 10-12 ounces of sliced ham. This is where those glorious holiday ham leftovers shine! If you don’t have leftovers, quality deli ham works just as well. Aim for about three slices per roll for a hearty filling.
- Swiss Cheese: Swiss cheese is a classic pairing with ham, offering a nutty, slightly sweet flavor and fantastic melting properties. However, feel free to experiment with other cheeses like provolone, cheddar, or even a blend if you prefer.
- The Honey-Dijon Butter Sauce: This is the secret weapon that elevates these sliders from good to absolutely phenomenal. It consists of:
- Melted Unsalted Butter: The base for richness and a golden crust.
- Honey: Adds a touch of sweetness that perfectly balances the savory ham and mustard.
- Dijon or Yellow Mustard: Provides that essential tangy, slightly spicy kick that defines this classic flavor combination.
- Poppy Seeds: Offers a delightful textural contrast and visual appeal.
- Dried Minced Onion: Infuses an aromatic depth without the raw bite of fresh onion.
- Worcestershire Sauce: A savory umami boost that ties all the flavors together.
- Salt and Pepper: To season the sauce to perfection.
How to Make These Irresistible Sliders: A Step-by-Step Guide
Making these ham and cheese sliders is incredibly simple, even for novice cooks. Follow these easy steps to create a batch of perfectly baked, cheesy, and savory sandwiches:
- Prepare Your Rolls: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Take your thawed package of Rhodes Warm-N-Serv Soft Yeast Rolls. Using a sharp serrated knife, carefully slice the entire block of rolls in half horizontally, keeping them connected. This makes assembly much faster.
- Assemble the Base: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan. Place the bottom halves of the sliced rolls into the prepared pan, ensuring they fit snugly.
- Add the Spreads and Fillings: Spread an even layer of mayonnaise or Miracle Whip (or your preferred blend) over the bottom halves of the rolls. Next, layer a slice of Swiss cheese on each roll, followed by a generous few slices of ham. Arrange the ham so it covers the cheese as much as possible. Finally, place the top halves of the rolls back over the ham and cheese, completing the sandwich structure.
- Craft the Buttery Honey-Mustard Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, honey, Dijon or yellow mustard, poppy seeds, dried minced onion, and Worcestershire sauce. Season the mixture to taste with salt and pepper. This magical sauce is what gives the sliders their signature flavor and moist texture.
- Glaze and Bake: Evenly brush or pour the prepared honey-dijon butter sauce over the tops of the assembled rolls. Make sure to get some of that delicious sauce in between the rolls for maximum flavor infusion.
- Bake to Perfection: Cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. This initial covered bake allows the flavors to meld, the cheese to melt slowly, and the rolls to become wonderfully soft and warm without drying out.
- Achieve Golden Tops: For the last 3-5 minutes of baking, remove the foil. This step allows the tops of the rolls to turn golden brown and slightly crispy, while the cheese finishes melting into a gooey perfection. Keep an eye on them, especially if using a metal or thinner-type pan, as they might cook faster – check for doneness around 15-20 minutes in such cases.
- Serve Immediately: Once baked and perfectly golden, remove the pan from the oven. Let them cool for a minute or two, then slice them apart and serve warm.
Tips for the Best Ham and Cheese Sliders
While these sliders are incredibly simple, a few tips can help you achieve absolute perfection every time:
- Don’t Skimp on the Glaze: The honey-dijon butter sauce is the star! Ensure it’s evenly distributed over the tops of the rolls. Don’t be afraid to let it seep into the crevices; that’s where all the magic happens.
- Use Good Quality Ham and Cheese: The flavor of your ham and cheese will directly impact the final taste. Opt for fresh deli ham or flavorful leftover holiday ham, and a cheese that melts well and complements the ham, like Swiss or provolone.
- Keep Rolls Connected: Slicing the entire block of rolls in half at once saves time and helps keep everything aligned during assembly.
- Cover for Even Baking: Baking covered with foil initially creates a steamy environment that ensures the rolls soften, the cheese melts thoroughly, and the flavors infuse without the tops burning.
- Remove Foil for Browning: Don’t forget this crucial step! Removing the foil for the last few minutes gives the tops a beautiful golden-brown color and a slight crispness, adding wonderful texture.
- Check Doneness Based on Pan Type: Metal pans tend to heat faster than ceramic or glass. If using a metal pan, start checking for doneness a bit earlier, around the 15-20 minute mark, to prevent overcooking.
Variations and Substitutions
These ham and cheese sliders are wonderfully adaptable. Feel free to get creative and customize them to your taste:
- Cheese Choices: While Swiss is traditional, provolone, mild cheddar, Gouda, or even a Monterey Jack work beautifully. A smoked cheese can add another layer of flavor.
- Different Meats: Not a fan of ham? Try sliced turkey, roast beef, or even thinly sliced cooked chicken for different slider variations.
- Add a Kick: For a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the butter sauce, or finely diced jalapeños inside the sliders.
- Extra Flavor Boosters: A thin layer of caramelized onions, a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning on top (instead of poppy seeds and dried onion), or a dash of garlic powder in the sauce can all enhance the flavor.
- Sweet Glaze Alternatives: If you’re out of honey, maple syrup can be a delicious substitute in the butter sauce.
When to Serve Ham and Cheese Sliders
The versatility of these baked ham and cheese sliders is truly unmatched. They fit seamlessly into almost any dining scenario, making them a reliable choice for busy hosts and hungry families alike:
- Holiday Leftovers: After Christmas or Easter, these sliders are a stellar way to transform leftover ham into a completely new and exciting meal. Say goodbye to boring reheated ham!

- Quick Weeknight Dinners: When time is tight, these sliders come to the rescue. Pair them with a simple salad or some chips for a satisfying and easy family meal.
- New Year’s Eve or Any Holiday Appetizer: Their festive appeal and deliciousness make them perfect for welcoming the new year or serving at any holiday gathering.
- Potlucks & Picnics: Transport easily and are a guaranteed hit. They’re wonderful served warm but also hold up well at room temperature for a short period.

Seriously, these ham and cheese sliders are finger-licking good! That savory, sweet, and tangy sauce truly permeates every nook and cranny of the sandwich, infusing the ham, cheese, and soft rolls with an incredible depth of flavor.
