Spiral-Cut Grilled Hot Dogs with Crispy Edges and Smoky Flavor

Spiraled BBQ Hot Dogs

I first discovered these spiraled hot dogs from my friend Kyra at Caramel Potatoes and fell in love with the idea. As soon as the weather warmed up, I knew these would be on my grill for the kids — and honestly, for me too.

They’re just so charming and make a fun twist on a simple, kid-friendly dinner. The spiral cut helps the hot dogs char evenly while the centers cook through, and brushing them with BBQ sauce adds great flavor. I’m not normally a big hot dog fan, but these I’ll make every time. The spiral also makes it easy to break off smaller pieces for little kids, which is a handy trick for your next BBQ.

Ingredients

  • Wooden skewers
  • Water (for soaking skewers)
  • Bun-length hot dogs
  • Your favorite BBQ sauce

Instructions

  • Soak wooden skewers in water for 10–30 minutes depending on thickness. Thinner skewers need longer soaking to help reduce burning at the ends.
  • Insert a skewer lengthwise down the center of each hot dog to stabilize it while cutting and grilling.
  • Using a paring knife, cut at a slight angle right up against the skewer. Rotate the hot dog as you cut to create a spiral about 1 inch thick. Take care with the knife and go slowly for even spirals.
  • Grill the hot dogs on the skewer over medium heat, turning once or twice until they puff up, the edges brown, and the centers are hot. Brush with BBQ sauce during the last minute or two of grilling to glaze them without burning the sauce.

Notes

If you’re confident with a knife, you can skip the skewer and cut the spiral freehand. The skewer mainly helps you cut and grill without the hot dog falling apart.
