Swiss and Onion Turkey Burgers

Some days you’re trying to eat better, but all you can think about is a big, juicy burger. I get it—I’ve managed significant weight loss and still have moments when cravings strike. These Swiss and Onion Turkey Burgers are a great solution: tender, satisfying, and lighter than a traditional beef burger.

I used Sweet Onion Seasoned Butterball turkey burgers, which grill easily indoors or outside and cook in about 15 minutes. The caramelized onions take longer—about 30 minutes—but they bring a rich, slightly sweet depth that makes the burger feel gourmet. Add Swiss cheese, which pairs beautifully with caramelized onions, and you have a classic flavor combination that satisfies any burger craving.

These turkey burgers are lean and flavorful, so they’re an easy way to serve something your family will enjoy while being a healthier option. They cook quickly, making them perfect for weeknight dinners, tailgating, or any gathering where you want a hearty burger without the heaviness of beef. Because they’re juicy and well-seasoned, many guests won’t even realize they’re turkey burgers.

Condiments are optional. We like to serve these on toasted buns—swap a lettuce wrap if you prefer—and add a side of fresh vegetables. Simple, delicious, and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 3 Sweet Onion Seasoned Butterball turkey burgers (each box contains 6 burgers, packaged as two sets of 3)
  • 3 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large Walla Walla or sweet onion, sliced about 1/4-inch thin
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil
  • 3 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • In a large non-stick skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion and cook uncovered for 10 minutes. Season lightly with salt, then continue to cook uncovered for another 20 minutes, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Cook low and slow—if they look dry, add a tablespoon or two of water; if they start to stick, add a bit more oil. Keep warm.
  • Cook the turkey burgers following the package instructions. For frozen burgers: preheat the grill to medium heat, lightly brush or spray both sides of the frozen burgers with oil, and place them about 4 inches above the heat. Grill 8 minutes on one side, then flip and grill 7 minutes more or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Top each warm burger with a slice of Swiss cheese and a generous scoop of the caramelized onions. Serve on toasted buns or a lettuce wrap and enjoy.
