There’s an undeniable charm to thumbprint cookies. These delightful little morsels, known for their tender centers waiting to be filled with an array of sweet surprises, hold a special place in the hearts of cookie lovers everywhere. But what if we told you we’ve found a way to elevate this classic to a whole new level of decadence? Prepare to fall in love with our Chocolate Cream Thumbprint Cookies – a magnificent blend of rich chocolate, crunchy nuts, velvety buttercream, and the iconic melt-in-your-mouth chocolate kiss.
My personal obsession with thumbprint cookies runs deep. Their versatility is simply unmatched! From vibrant fruit jams to luscious caramels, the possibilities for flavor combinations are endless, especially with the wide variety of Hershey’s Kisses available today. While holiday-themed Kisses certainly add a festive touch, for this recipe, we’re returning to the comforting familiarity of classic milk chocolate Kisses. The true secret weapon here, however, lies in the creamy, sweet buttercream nestled beneath each chocolate candy, adding an unexpected layer of richness and texture that sets these cookies apart.

Crafting the Perfect Chocolate Cookie Base
The foundation of any great thumbprint cookie is its dough, and ours is nothing short of perfection. We’ve utilized a tried-and-true chocolate cookie base, similar to the one featured in our beloved turtle thumbprints recipe. This dough is specifically designed to be incredibly thick, yielding a soft and wonderfully chewy texture that holds its shape beautifully while baking. Its robust chocolate flavor provides the ideal canvas for the other components of this recipe.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of this recipe is the opportunity to customize. While many thumbprint cookies call for pecans or walnuts, I opted for my absolute favorite nut for coating: cashews. Their buttery texture and slightly sweet flavor complement the rich chocolate and creamy filling beautifully. Of course, you are absolutely encouraged to use your preferred nut – finely chopped pecans, almonds, or even walnuts would be fantastic alternatives. Whichever you choose, ensure they are chopped to a consistent size for even coating and baking.

The Irresistible Buttercream and Chocolate Kiss Combination
The magic truly happens when these warm, freshly baked cookies meet their glorious toppings. The technique for assembling these Chocolate Cream Thumbprint Cookies is simple yet brilliant. As with many classic kiss cookies, we place the chocolate kiss into the warm cookie’s indentation immediately after baking. This allows the heat from the cookie to gently soften and slightly melt the base of the chocolate, creating that alluring, glossy finish that makes every bite feel extra special.
However, we don’t stop there. For an added layer of flavor and luxurious creaminess, we carefully lift the partially melted chocolate kiss, pipe a dollop of our homemade buttercream into the center, and then gently nestle the chocolate kiss back into its spot. This creates a visually stunning effect with the melty chocolate, but more importantly, it introduces a burst of sweet, smooth buttercream that perfectly balances the rich cookie and the chocolate candy. The resulting contrast in textures and temperatures is simply divine.

Tips for Perfecting Your Chocolate Cream Thumbprints
Achieving bakery-quality thumbprint cookies at home is easier than you think with a few key tips:
- Chilling the Dough is Crucial: Don’t skip the refrigeration step for the cookie dough. Chilling helps solidify the butter, preventing the cookies from spreading too much in the oven and making the dough much easier to handle and roll into perfect balls. A well-chilled dough ensures your cookies maintain their shape and that essential thumbprint indentation.
- Even Coating of Nuts: When dipping the cookie dough balls into the egg white and then the chopped nuts, ensure a complete and even coating. This not only provides a beautiful aesthetic but also delivers that satisfying crunch in every bite. Lightly pressing the nuts onto the dough can help them adhere better.
- The Right Indentation: A ½ teaspoon measuring spoon is typically the perfect tool for creating the thumbprint indentation. Press firmly but gently enough not to break through the bottom of the cookie dough. This creates a well that perfectly cradles the buttercream and chocolate kiss.
- Temperature Matters: Placing the chocolate kisses on warm cookies is key for that slight melt. However, don’t let them sit too long before adding the buttercream. A minute or two is usually enough for the bottom to soften while the top remains intact, making it easier to lift and pipe the buttercream.
- Buttercream Consistency: Ensure your buttercream is smooth and pipeable. If it’s too stiff, add a tiny bit more milk; if it’s too runny, add a little more powdered sugar until you reach the desired consistency for easy piping into the small indentations.
Variations to Try
While this recipe is a classic in its own right, feel free to experiment with these delicious variations:
- Nut Alternatives: As mentioned, pecans, almonds, or walnuts are excellent substitutes for cashews. For a nut-free option, try rolling the dough in shredded coconut or even mini chocolate chips for a double chocolate delight.
- Different Hershey’s Kisses: Unleash your creativity with different Hershey’s Kiss flavors! Peppermint Kisses for the holidays, caramel-filled Kisses for an extra gooey center, or even dark chocolate Kisses for a richer, more intense chocolate experience.
- Flavorful Buttercream: Add a touch of almond extract to the buttercream for a subtle nutty flavor, or a hint of coffee extract to complement the chocolate. A tiny bit of orange zest could also add a bright, unexpected twist.
- White Chocolate Drizzle: Once the cookies are completely cool, a drizzle of melted white chocolate over the top can add an extra layer of visual appeal and sweetness.
The Perfect Treat for Any Occasion
The outcome of these efforts is a truly sensational cookie: a perfectly balanced symphony of crunchy nuts, rich chocolate, and sweet, smooth buttercream. These Chocolate Cream Thumbprint Cookies are wonderfully soft and chewy, yet sturdy enough to hold their beautiful shape and delectable fillings. They are surprisingly easy to make, making them an ideal choice for both experienced bakers and those new to the kitchen. Whether you’re baking for a special occasion, a holiday gathering, or simply to satisfy a sweet craving, these cookies are guaranteed to impress. I’m already dreaming of whipping up another batch! Chocolate Cream Thumbprints Recipe

Chocolate Cream Thumbprints
Pin Recipe
Ingredients
- ½ cup (113 g) butter, softened
- ⅔ cup (134 g) granulated sugar
- 1 egg, separated
- 2 Tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup (120 g) all-purpose flour, (stir, spoon, & level)
- ⅓ cup (27 g) cocoa powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup (140 g) chopped cashews
Buttercream:
- ¾ cup (90 g) powdered sugar
- 1 ½ Tbsp (21 g) butter, softened
- 1 Tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 24 milk chocolate kisses
Instructions
-
Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
-
In a separate medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet chocolate mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. CHILL THE DOUGH in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until it is firm enough to easily handle without being sticky. (While chilling can sometimes be skipped, it significantly improves the dough’s workability and helps prevent spreading.)
-
While the dough is chilling, unwrap all 24 milk chocolate kisses. Next, prepare the buttercream: in a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Transfer the prepared buttercream into a zip-top bag and snip off a small corner for piping.
-
Once the dough is chilled, roll it into 24 uniform round balls. In a shallow bowl, whisk the egg white until it becomes foamy. Dip each cookie dough ball into the foamy egg white, allowing any excess to drip off, then roll it generously in the chopped cashews, ensuring the entire surface is covered. Place the nut-covered dough balls onto a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (or lightly greased with cooking spray).
-
Using a ½ teaspoon measuring spoon, gently press an indent into the top center of each cookie dough ball.
-
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C). Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are still soft. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack. Immediately place a milk chocolate kiss into the center of each warm cookie. Allow the kisses to sit for 1 to 2 minutes, just long enough for their bottoms to slightly melt and adhere to the cookie, but ensuring the top remains solid.
-
Carefully lift each chocolate kiss from its cookie. Using the zip-top bag, pipe or squeeze a small amount of the prepared buttercream into the center indentation of each cookie. Gently place the chocolate kiss back on top of the buttercream. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the wire rack. Store the finished Chocolate Cream Thumbprint Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
