Life has a funny way of accelerating, and sometimes, amidst the whirlwind, we need simple joys. My recent move to the vibrant streets of New York City has been a testament to this. In a matter of days, I’ve transformed two checked bags into a new apartment setup, thanks to the invaluable help of my amazing mom. Let’s just say the delivery guys might remember me for a while, given the mattress and over 40 boxes that arrived in rapid succession! While the unpacking continues, the kitchen calls, beckoning me to create comforting delights that turn a new space into a home. And what better way to celebrate new beginnings than with warm, homemade cookies?
As I settle into the rhythms of city life, I’m incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by a supportive community of fellow bloggers. Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to one of these inspiring friends, a true artist in the culinary world, who has graciously agreed to share her magic with us.
Discovering Little Box Brownie: A Love Affair with Sophia Purvis’s Artistry
From the moment I embarked on my blogging journey with AHC, Sophia Purvis of Little Box Brownie captured my heart. Her blog was one of the first that I completely fell in love with, and for good reason. Sophia possesses a unique gift for creating moody, romantic photography that elevates baking to an art form. Her vintage props, meticulously chosen and incorporated, tell a story in every frame, imbued with such attention to detail and an almost reverent quality that always left me mesmerized. It wasn’t just about the food; it was about the entire aesthetic experience she crafted.
I followed her journey with an almost “groupie-like” devotion through her initial year, witnessing the birth of her new business, and eagerly anticipating the publishing of her cookbook. The thought of owning her cookbook became a delightful obsession, a culinary treasure I simply *must* have, despite the geographical challenge of it being an Australia/New Zealand exclusive.
When my family planned a trip to New Zealand, I seized the opportunity. I arranged for Sophia to ship a copy directly to my hotel, and upon its arrival, my family and I poured over every single page. It was a revelation! Each photograph was more stunning than the last, every recipe more tempting. It is truly a work of art, a testament to Sophia’s talent and passion. If you happen to reside in Australia or New Zealand, this book is an absolute essential for your kitchen library.
Today, my excitement is palpable, and I’m deeply honored to host Sophia right here on AHC!

Ingredients
- 9 tablespoons butter
- 1 ½ cups brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 1 egg
- 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup chocolate chips I like to add white and dark chocolate but the choice is yours
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 180°C or 350°F.
-
Cream butter, brown sugar, and vanilla essence together until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is crucial for that perfect cookie texture.
-
Add the egg and mix until it’s fully combined into the butter mixture, ensuring a smooth consistency.
-
In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder. Gradually stir these dry ingredients into the wet butter mixture until just combined. Be careful not to overmix!
-
Fold in the chocolate chips. Feel free to use a combination of white, milk, and dark chocolate chips for an even richer double chocolate experience.
-
Spoon cookie dough onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between each cookie. Gently press them down slightly to encourage even spreading.
-
Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the tops show slight cracks but the cookies still feel soft to the touch in the center. The key to gooey cookies is to avoid overbaking; they will continue to set as they cool.
