Why You’ll Love This Stuffed French Toast Recipe

Unbeatable Flavor Combination

The pairing of sweet, creamy Nutella with the bright, slightly acidic burst of fresh strawberries is a match made in culinary heaven. When these flavors are nestled inside warm, eggy French toast, they create a symphony of textures and tastes that is truly unforgettable. The rich chocolate hazelnut spread melts beautifully when cooked, creating a molten center that oozes with delight, perfectly complemented by the tender strawberry slices.

Surprisingly Easy to Make

Despite its gourmet appearance and luxurious taste, this stuffed French toast is incredibly straightforward to prepare. The main technique involves simply spreading the filling onto bread, folding it, and crimping the edges. This process is simple enough for novice cooks and makes it a perfect weekend project for families. Using quality ingredients like Rhodes White Bread further simplifies the process, ensuring a soft, fluffy base for your delicious stuffing.

Kid-Friendly and Fun

Involving children in the kitchen fosters a love for cooking and healthy eating habits. This recipe is particularly engaging for younger helpers. Kids can assist with spreading the Nutella, arranging the strawberries, and even helping to whisk the egg batter. The “stuffing” aspect feels like a fun, creative project, turning meal prep into an enjoyable game. Just be sure to supervise younger children with slicing and cooking steps.

Tips for Perfect Stuffed French Toast Every Time

Choosing the Right Bread

The foundation of great French toast is good bread. A slightly thicker slice works best for stuffing, as it can hold the filling without tearing. Rhodes White Bread is an excellent choice due to its soft texture and consistent quality, providing a sturdy yet tender canvas for your sweet creation. Day-old bread can also be wonderful, as it’s less likely to become soggy when dipped in the egg mixture.

Preparing Your Filling

For the strawberries, make sure they are hulled and sliced evenly. A handy tip for getting perfectly uniform slices, especially when cooking with kids, is to use an egg slicer! It makes quick work of slicing strawberries safely and creates consistent pieces that are ideal for stuffing. Don’t be shy with the Nutella – a generous layer ensures that decadent chocolate-hazelnut flavor in every bite.

Sealing the Deal

After spreading the Nutella and placing the strawberries on one half of the bread, fold the other half over. To keep the delicious filling securely inside, use the tines of a fork to gently crimp the edges of the bread. This creates a neat, sealed pocket that prevents the Nutella and strawberries from escaping during cooking, ensuring a delightful surprise when you cut into it.

The Perfect Batter

A well-seasoned egg batter is key to flavorful French toast. Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until fully combined. If you find the egg mixture has too many stringy membranes, a tiny dash of salt can help break them down for a smoother consistency. Ensure your bread is thoroughly coated on both sides without soaking for too long, which can make it mushy.

Cooking to Golden Perfection

Heat your griddle or large sauté pan over medium heat and lightly coat it with cooking spray or butter. Cook each piece of stuffed French toast until both sides are beautifully golden brown and firm to the touch. This indicates that the egg batter has cooked through, and your bread is perfectly crispy on the outside with a warm, soft interior. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning while ensuring thorough cooking.

Endless Possibilities: Creative Variations and Topping Ideas

The beauty of stuffed French toast lies in its incredible versatility. While the Strawberry Nutella combination is a classic for a reason, don’t hesitate to experiment with different fillings to suit your taste or what you have on hand. The possibilities are truly endless, making this recipe a fantastic canvas for your culinary creativity:

  • Banana & Peanut Butter: A timeless combination! Spread peanut butter on one side, layer with sliced bananas, and enjoy a protein-packed, satisfying breakfast.
  • Sweetened Cream Cheese & Fruit: Mix cream cheese with a little sugar and vanilla, then add your favorite berries (blueberries, raspberries, or more strawberries!) for a cheesecake-like treat.
  • Chocolate Chip Delight: For the ultimate chocolate lover, simply sprinkle chocolate chips (milk, dark, or white) inside before sealing. They’ll melt into gooey pockets of chocolate bliss.
  • Apple Pie French Toast: Sauté finely diced apples with cinnamon and a touch of brown sugar until soft. Use this mixture as a warm, comforting filling.
  • Cream Cheese & Jam: Spread cream cheese and a dollop of your favorite fruit jam (strawberry, apricot, or raspberry) for a quick and fruity option.
  • Savory Twist: For those who prefer savory, consider a ham and cheese or spinach and feta filling, adjusting the batter spices accordingly.

Once cooked, your stuffed French toast is a masterpiece on its own, but a few simple toppings can take it to the next level. Serve it as is, with a delicate dusting of powdered sugar for an elegant touch, or smother it in your favorite maple syrup. For an extra special presentation, add a dollop of whipped cream and a few fresh berries. No matter how you choose to serve it, you will not regret making this delightful recipe!

Yields: 10 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Rhodes White Bread, risen, baked, and cut into 1-inch thick slices (about 10 slices)
  • Fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced (tip: use an egg slicer to safely cut even pieces)
  • Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Dash salt, optional

Instructions

  1. Spread Nutella across one slice of bread. Place a few pieces of sliced strawberries on one half.
  2. Fold the bread over the strawberries and crimp the edges with a fork to hide the Nutella and strawberries inside. Repeat with the remaining slices of bread.
  3. Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon together on a large plate. You can add a dash of salt to help break up the egg membranes, if needed.
  4. Dip each stuffed piece of bread in the egg mixture coating both sides. Cook both sides on a medium-hot griddle (or in a large sauté pan), that has been coated in cooking spray, until golden brown and dry to the touch (so you know the egg mixture has cooked thoroughly).
  5. Serve as is, dusted with powdered sugar, or smothered in syrup. Then dig in! Enjoy!

Notes

For an extra touch, serve with a side of whipped cream or a fresh strawberry compote.
