I love KFC coleslaw. I rarely eat out, but when I do I always choose the coleslaw and a biscuit as my sides. That sweet, slightly tangy, crunchy salad is irresistible—it’s the perfect accompaniment to fried chicken.

This copycat recipe captures that classic flavor. It actually improves after resting, so make it ahead and chill it for a few hours to let the flavors meld and the cabbage soften. You’ll be pleased with how close it gets to the original.

Ingredients
- ½ cup light Miracle Whip or mayonnaise
- ¼ cup buttermilk (or milk plus ¼ tsp lemon juice; let sit 5 minutes before using)
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 ½ Tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ tsp celery seed
- ½ tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp pepper
- 2 Tbsp grated onion (yellow, white, or sweet Vidalia)
- 16 oz shredded bagged coleslaw cabbage mix
Instructions
-
In a medium to large bowl, whisk together the Miracle Whip or mayonnaise, buttermilk (or milk with lemon), lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, sugar, celery seed, salt, pepper, and grated onion. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
-
Add the shredded coleslaw cabbage mix and stir thoroughly so the dressing coats everything evenly.
-
Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 2–3 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the cabbage to soften. Stir again before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute ½ tsp onion powder if you prefer not to use fresh grated onion.
