Summer warmth is already here, so it felt like the perfect time to share an easy slow cooker dinner idea. I’m a big fan of smoked sausage—kielbasa, kielbasa-style links, chicken or turkey sausage—any long, horseshoe-shaped link you can slice and toss into a meal. Two of our go-to recipes using this kind of sausage are Quick Sausage Jambalaya and Easy Grilled Summer Vegetable & Sausage foil packets served with Garlic Parmesan Orzo.

This sweet-and-sour smoked sausage is another recipe that quickly became a favorite at our house. It’s nice to have something different from the usual chicken or ground beef dinners. A typical 14-ounce kielbasa or smoked sausage link often goes on sale for about $2.50, and when you add vegetables and serve the dish over brown rice or pasta, it stretches nicely to feed a family. The result is simple, flavorful, and economical. You can also substitute cubed chicken if you prefer, but the smoked sausage brings a great smoky-sweet balance that’s worth trying.
