Pumpkin Swirl Brownies Recipe: Gooey Chocolate with Autumn Spice

Pumpkin Swirl Brownies

Ever end up with about 1/2 cup of leftover pumpkin puree after baking and wonder what to do with it? These Pumpkin Swirl Brownies are the perfect answer.

Pumpkin and chocolate brownies

Chocolate and pumpkin pair surprisingly well. The rich, fudgy brownie base combined with a smooth, spiced pumpkin-cream cheese swirl creates moist, flavorful bars that balance sweetness and autumn spices. If you need to open a can of pumpkin just to make these, it’s worth it.

9 brownies

Ingredients

  • 18.3 oz (520 g) box family-size brownie mix (for a 13×9″ pan)
  • Ingredients called for on the brownie mix package (for example: 1/4 cup water, 2/3 cup vegetable oil, and 2 eggs)
  • 4 oz (113 g) block-style cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (122 g) pumpkin puree
  • 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the brownie batter in a large bowl according to the directions on the box. Whisk until combined and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, use a hand mixer to beat the softened cream cheese with the pumpkin puree, 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 large egg, and pumpkin pie spice until smooth.
  • Grease an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking dish. Spread about three-quarters of the brownie batter evenly across the bottom of the pan. Pour the pumpkin-cream cheese mixture over the brownie layer. Dollop the remaining brownie batter on top of the pumpkin layer.
  • Use a butter knife to swirl the brownie and pumpkin layers together to create a marbled effect. Bake at 350°F for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before cutting.
  • Store the brownies covered in the refrigerator. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

Use canned pumpkin puree—avoid pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices. If you prefer a stronger pumpkin spice flavor, add a little extra pumpkin pie spice to the cream cheese mixture. Baking times can vary by oven; check the center for doneness.
