Cracker Toffee (also known as Christmas Crack) is incredibly simple to make and irresistibly addictive. Saltine crackers are covered with a quick toffee layer, then finished with chocolate and your choice of toppings.

This cracker toffee is one of the easiest candies to prepare—practically foolproof. If the idea of candy-making makes you nervous, this recipe is simple and forgiving. It yields a large batch in a short amount of time, making it ideal for holiday gift plates or sharing with neighbors and friends.

Cracker Toffee
This version is a simplified take on English toffee and requires just five main ingredients: crackers, butter, brown sugar, chocolate chips, and nuts. If you prefer, skip the nuts or swap them for M&Ms, sprinkles, or any crunchy or colorful topping you like. You can also substitute saltine crackers with graham crackers or other crisp crackers—the flexibility makes this a great customizable treat.

The saltines provide a light, crispy texture and a touch of salt that balances the sweet toffee and chocolate. That contrast keeps each bite from feeling overly rich, which is why this candy is so hard to stop eating.

Because it’s so addictive, this treat earned the nickname “Christmas Crack.” Make extra to share—your friends and neighbors will thank you.

Cracker Toffee
Ingredients
- 35 saltine or club crackers (about 1 sleeve)
- 1 cup (226 g) butter
- 1 cup (200 g) brown sugar, gently packed
- 2 cups (340 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (one 12-oz bag)
- 1 cup (112 g) chopped nuts* (pecans, walnuts, or almonds)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, covering the sides. A half sheet or jelly roll pan works best.
- Arrange the crackers in a single layer, close together, on the parchment so they form a nearly continuous surface.
- In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the butter and brown sugar, stirring occasionally until melted and combined.
- Bring the mixture to a full, rolling boil—one that doesn’t stop when you stir. Reduce the heat slightly to maintain a steady boil without scorching. Set a timer for 3 minutes and stop stirring.
- After 3 minutes, immediately pour the hot sugar mixture evenly over the crackers. It will spread during baking, so try to distribute it but don’t worry if coverage isn’t perfect.
- Bake at 400°F for 7 minutes. Around the three-minute mark you’ll see bubbling that helps spread the toffee over the crackers.
- Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Return to the oven for 2 minutes to soften the chips, then let sit 1–2 minutes so they melt. Use an offset spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly.
- Immediately sprinkle chopped nuts over the warm chocolate. (Toasting the nuts first in a skillet over medium heat for 3–5 minutes enhances their flavor.) Allow the sheet to cool completely, then break into pieces.
Notes
*Nuts can be omitted or replaced with M&Ms, sprinkles, or other toppings. You can also use other salty crackers (Ritz, Club) or graham crackers for a different texture.
