Life, undoubtedly, presents its full share of challenges, complexities, and unexpected turns. We all navigate moments of difficulty, uncertainty, and even despair. However, through my unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, I have discovered a profound and enduring sense of purpose and meaning that anchors me amidst life’s inevitable storms. I bear personal witness that God knows me, individually and intimately. He is a loving Heavenly Father who, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, extends countless blessings and tender mercies into my life, both during times of overflowing joy and through periods of significant struggle. I am far from perfect; indeed, I strive each day to live by gospel principles, and I trust implicitly that through the boundless grace and Atonement of Jesus Christ, my imperfections are overcome, and my sincere efforts are divinely magnified.

The Principle of Tithing: A Powerful Test of Faith and a Consistent Source of Blessing

There are numerous beautiful and enriching aspects to the Latter-day Saint faith, but today, I want to delve into a deeply personal and pivotal experience I had with one particular gospel principle: tithing. Tithing, in our faith, is understood as the freewill offering of 10% of one’s income to the Lord, rendered through His Church. It is not merely a financial transaction; rather, it is a sacred privilege and a tangible, deeply personal expression of gratitude to God for His countless blessings. It requires genuine, unwavering faith and profound trust in the Lord to prioritize this offering, consciously choosing spiritual investment over material reliance, especially when financial resources might seem scarce or uncertain.

This principle was powerfully illuminated and eternally cemented in my heart during a pivotal and challenging time in my life. My husband and I were young newlyweds, filled with dreams for our future and facing the exciting, yet daunting, prospect of welcoming our first child. At that point in our lives, I was the primary income earner, working full-time, while my husband diligently pursued his college education and held a necessary part-time job to help make ends meet. Our financial situation, as is common for many young couples starting out, was tight but, we believed, manageable with careful planning.

My job at a bustling bakery demanded long, physically exhausting hours. I spent a good 8 to 10 hours a day on my feet, a challenging feat even without the added strain of advanced pregnancy. As I neared the very end of my term, during the peak of summer heat, my feet became terribly swollen and painful, and I felt utterly depleted from the demanding schedule. Bakers often work unconventional hours, and my shifts typically began around midnight or 2:00 A.M., concluding by 10 A.M. or noon, with only a single short break for breakfast around 7 A.M. The physical toll on my pregnant body was immense, and I longed for relief.

Recognizing the severe strain on my body and the need for rest before childbirth, I made the difficult decision to begin my maternity leave earlier than initially planned. This was a significant financial risk, as my position didn’t include paid maternity leave. We had carefully budgeted and diligently saved, believing we had just enough money to comfortably see us through the summer months until after the baby arrived and I could eventually return to work. We had planned every dollar.

However, fate, or perhaps a trial sent to strengthen our faith, had a cruel twist in store. Not long after my maternity leave commenced, we discovered, with horrifying clarity, that someone had gained unauthorized access to our debit card information. In a horrifying instant, nearly all the money we had meticulously saved in our checking account – our lifeline for the coming months – was stolen. Panic immediately set in. This wasn’t just an inconvenience; it was our entire financial buffer for the coming months – funds designated for essential rent, utilities, food, and crucial upcoming baby expenses. We immediately reported the fraud to our bank, filed all necessary paperwork, but were informed that recovering our funds could unfortunately take a couple of months. We were left reeling, wondering how on earth we could possibly manage our essential bills and necessities with so little left in our account.

It was amidst this profound financial crisis, this moment of deep desperation, that we faced a critical, soul-searching decision. Our final paycheck, combined with my husband’s meager part-time earnings, presented us with a stark, agonizing choice: to faithfully pay our tithing, or to cling to every last dollar in a desperate, earthly attempt to make ends meet. It was incredibly difficult, almost incomprehensible, to consider giving away 10% of our already severely diminished income. Yet, after much fervent prayer, tearful discussion, and a deep reliance on our spiritual convictions, we made the conscious choice to pay our tithing. It was an act of profound, raw faith, placing our trust fully in the Lord that He would indeed watch over us, provide for our needs, and protect us in such dire and uncertain circumstances.

The answer to our prayers came swiftly and, to us, miraculously. Not long after paying our tithing in that challenging time of scarcity, we received an unexpected anonymous letter in the mail. Inside was a crisp, neatly folded $100 bill and a kind, heartfelt, handwritten note suggesting we use it for our “food storage, baby, or medical bills.” Overwhelmed with profound gratitude and emotion, I broke down in tears of relief and awe. It was a tangible, undeniable manifestation of divine care, a tender mercy sent through the hand of a kind, selfless soul who had clearly listened to spiritual promptings and acted with incredible generosity towards our struggling young family. This experience cemented our belief in the reality of divine intervention.

While many might dismiss such an event as mere “luck,” coincidence, or random chance, I know in my heart, with absolute and unwavering certainty, that it was far more. It was a direct, bespoke blessing from the Lord, a tender mercy extended precisely because of our faith and willingness to honor our sacred commitment to pay tithing, even when we faced immense uncertainty about covering our most basic expenses. This experience profoundly solidified my understanding that when we truly put God first in our lives, even when it feels difficult, He truly opens the windows of heaven and pours out blessings beyond our comprehension, often in ways we least expect.

Through sacred covenants made in a holy temple of the Lord, my husband and I were sealed for time and all eternity. This means that, as long as we strive to live God’s commandments to the very best of our ability and remain faithful to our sacred promises, our family relationships can indeed continue beyond this mortal life, extending into the boundless eternities. This sacred knowledge brings immense comfort, profound hope, and a heightened, deep appreciation for the precious, everlasting bonds we share with our loved ones, knowing that death is not the end of family connections.
