This Green Bean Casserole is made with a quick and easy homemade sauce – no canned cream soup required!

Thanksgiving is a time when many people make dishes from scratch. For this recipe I’m sharing a simple homemade “cream” sauce so you can enjoy a classic Green Bean Casserole without using condensed cream soup.

Green bean casserole is one of my favorite Thanksgiving sides—and, truthfully, one of the few ways I regularly enjoy green beans. It’s comforting, easy, and a dinner table staple.
I used store-bought French fried onions for the topping in this version, but I include the option to make homemade breaded and baked onion strings if you prefer. Homemade onions are delicious, but they add extra time. If you’re only responsible for bringing the casserole, the store-bought onions are a perfectly acceptable shortcut.

Is green bean casserole a must-have at your Thanksgiving? Here’s the recipe I use:

Ingredients
- 3 (14.5 oz) cans green beans
- 5 Tbsp butter
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup chicken or vegetable broth
- ¾ cup milk
- salt & pepper, to taste
- 3 oz French’s French Fried Onions
Instructions
-
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously until the mixture becomes fragrant and slightly nutty, about 1 minute.
-
Slowly whisk in the chicken or vegetable broth, then add the milk while whisking to combine smoothly.
-
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, whisking constantly, until it thickens into a creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain the liquid from the canned green beans and stir the beans into the sauce.
-
Transfer the beans and sauce to a lightly greased 13×9-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the top with the French fried onions. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 20 minutes, until the casserole is bubbly and heated through.
