This Mermaid Tail Cupcake Cake is a simple, show-stopping idea for a girl’s birthday or baby shower. The cupcakes pull apart for easy serving—no cutting required—and this tutorial walks you through each step. Below the cupcake instructions you’ll find mermaid party ideas for decorations, favors, food, and games.

Mermaid parties are a favorite for many little ones and make a charming theme for showers too. For my daughter’s eighth birthday I wanted a mermaid cake that looked delightful but was easy to serve, so I created this mermaid tail made from 24 pull-apart cupcakes.

Mermaid Tail Cupcake Cake Template
The template uses 24 cupcakes, which is the yield of most boxed cake mixes, though you can bake your favorite homemade cupcakes instead. I used double-lined silver wrappers to hide the chocolate cupcakes; gold or another color works well with lighter cupcakes. Attach each cupcake to a full-size sheet cake board using double-sided tape so they stay tightly grouped while you decorate.

How to Make a Mermaid Tail Pull Apart Cake
Work from the bottom fins up to the top waistband. I recommend preparing a reliable vanilla buttercream first (see recipe below). For the fins use a Wilton 2D large flower/star tip. Pipe each fin continuously, outlining the edge and filling toward the center. Keep the bag filled so you don’t introduce air bubbles or need to stop midway.

How to Pipe the Mermaid Tail Scales
Choose three frosting colors for the scales. Flip the board so the fins are at the top; place each color into its own piping bag fitted with a Wilton 1A or similar round tip. You’ll also want a small offset spatula and a clean damp cloth to wipe between colors.

Pipe colored dots directly onto each cupcake, lifting the bag straight up to form a small mound. Alternate colors and avoid placing the same colors next to each other. Where cupcakes don’t meet perfectly, pipe extra frosting to fill gaps. Using the offset spatula, press each dot’s tip down slightly and pull the spatula toward the unfrosted cupcakes to form a scale shape. Scrape excess frosting into three small bowls—one per color—and keep the spatula wiped clean between colors. Tip: complete one color across a row, then switch and wipe, then do the next color; this speeds the process and keeps lines clean.

When the scales reach the top, pipe a v-shaped waistband. Outline with any of the three colors—I used white since I had extra—and fill the center, smoothing with the offset spatula. A slightly damp spatula helps smooth bumps and blends lines. Finish with chocolate pearls along the waistband and scattered among the scales for a touch of shimmer.

When complete, your mermaid tail cupcake cake will be ready to display. To store it, slide the cake board onto the bottom of a cardboard cake box and assemble the box around the board. This keeps the cupcakes stable and protected until serving.

Mermaid Tail Cupcake Cake
Ingredients
- 15.25 oz (432 g) box cake mix + ingredients to make cake, (oil, water, eggs)
- 4 disposable piping bags, (12-inches or larger)
- 1 Wilton 2D tip
- 3 Wilton 1A tips
- Small offset spatula
- Clean damp washcloth
- 3 small bowls to scrape excess frosting
- Chocolate pearls for decorating
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
- 2 cups (452 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 6 cups (720 g) powdered sugar
- 6 Tbsp heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Food coloring paste, (2–3 colors; turquoise and purple suggested)
Instructions
-
For the cupcakes: Mix and bake cupcakes in paper baking cups according to package directions. Divide the batter evenly to make 24 cupcakes. Allow them to cool completely before decorating.
-
For the frosting: Beat the room-temperature butter with the salt until smooth. Add powdered sugar in increments, mixing between additions. Add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, then beat on high for about 30 seconds. Stir in vanilla until incorporated.
-
Divide and color the frosting: half turquoise for the fins and some scales, one-quarter purple, and one-quarter left white (or your preferred colors).
-
Fit piping bags: place half the turquoise in a bag with a Wilton 2D tip for the fins. Put the remaining turquoise, purple, and white each in separate bags fitted with Wilton 1A or similar round tips. Prepare three small bowls and a damp washcloth.
-
Use double-sided tape to adhere the cupcakes to a full-size sheet cake board in the mermaid tail arrangement.
-
Fins: Pipe fins with the slightly opened Wilton 2D tip, working continuously from edge to center. Keep bags full to avoid air pockets.
-
Scales: With the board flipped so fins are at the top, pipe colored dots and pull each with the offset spatula to create scales. Alternate colors and fill gaps as needed.
-
Wipe the spatula between colors and scrape excess frosting into the bowls. Work by color across a row to save time.
-
Waistband: Pipe a v-shaped outline at the top and fill it in. Smooth with a slightly damp spatula and decorate with chocolate pearls.
-
Decorate with pearls as desired. Store the cupcake cake in a cake box until ready to serve.
Notes
*Use heavy cream in the frosting for a lighter, whipped texture that smooths easily.

More Mermaid Party Ideas

For invitations you can create or customize a mermaid-themed design and print them like photos. We used a printable template that allowed color and text edits, then ordered prints for mailing.

Decorations included a decorative fish net, balloons tucked inside the net, and a mermaid tail banner. Tape works well for hanging nets outdoors—just account for wind—and lightweight items tucked into the net create an oceanic look.

For favor bags use simple white gift bags and attach a mermaid silhouette or other printable art. Fill bags with small toys and treats like pens, stampers, mini bubbles, bracelets, and mermaid-themed notebooks.

We added small jars of blue and purple candy pearls and mini blue soda bottles labeled as “sea water” for a fun edible favor.

For food, serve easy items with ocean-themed names: sub “sand-wiches,” Coral (Crunchy Cheetos), Seafood (Swedish Fish), Seashells (Bugles), and a Paradise Fruit Salad of strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple. Drinks can include a blue punch made from blue fruit punch mixed with a clear soda.

Mermaid Party Water Games
Water games are perfect for a summer mermaid party. We set up several group games that were easy to organize and a lot of fun:
Sponge Relay — Split into two teams. Each team uses a large sponge to pass water down a line of players and squeeze it into an empty bucket at the end. The team with the most water in their bucket wins.
Pass the Water — Similar relay using small cups. Each player pours water over their head or into the next player’s cup; the last player pours into the empty bucket. Repeat until the starting bucket is empty; the team with most water collected wins.
Water Balloon Spoon Race — Players balance filled water balloons on large spoons and race to a turnaround point and back, passing the spoon to the next teammate. Decide rules for dropped balloons beforehand.
Water Ball Catch — Using a small pool, teams retrieve water-soaked sponge balls and throw them to a designated catcher near a bucket. The team with the most balls collected in their bucket wins. Rotate catchers so more kids get a turn.
These simple activities keep kids engaged and cool. Adapt rules and equipment to the ages and group size at your party.
